Hot New Styles from Clever

(20 September 2010)

Clever is one of those brands where the name says it all. Their collection of guys briefs, boxers, trunks and thongs run the gamut of fabrics and colors and designs is always refreshingly clever. Then there’s the fit—no matter what the style, Clever underwear is all about the body, giving a little boost in both the front and the back that all guys can appreciate. A slew of new styles hit the electronic shelves this week, and here are some of our favorites:

The Basic Sporty Thong is great because it’s not as scanty as some other guys thongs, so it provides a bit more coverage. Not that there’s anything wrong with showing a little skin, but it’s always nice to have options. We’d have to rate this as one of the most comfortable thongs we’ve tried, as the section in the back where the waistband gets covered by the same cotton as the rest of the thong provides extra softness.

The colorful prints are one of Clever’s strongest areas, and we love the Reticulated Boxer because of the vivid, yet subtle design. It’s just enough color to make a splash, but doesn’t scream “this is my underwear!”

The guy who likes his underwear to scream, or at least say something, will definitely want the Amazonic Boxer, decked out in a tropical print inspired by the lush Amazonian Rainforest.

The magic of the D-3 Angle Classic Brief definitely lies in the design, where a high-cut front leg section makes the package look a little more prominent, but the geometric print adds the perfect amount of detail.

And for the Zenia Boxer Brief it’s what you see as well as what you don’t that gives this semi-sheer trunk its sexy edge. Sheer bars in the fabric give little glimpses of skin, so the guy who dares to be a little more adventurous with his underwear can still play it safe.

There’s definitely a style for everyone this fall from the Clever Men’s Underwear Collection. We have a feeling our own underwear drawer will become a lot more clever.

Go Planet!

(18 September 2010)

Even though Captain Planet is a bit of a sore subject for the Aussies, what with Australia being, well, snubbed from inclusion in the Planeteers, we can’t help but shout the mantra that invoked our favorite mulleted superhero when we see the new X Elements Collection from Calvin Klein. Inspired by the four elements (the folks at CK must have decided “heart” was an element best left to the show), this collection of trunks and boxer briefs is a great way to get in touch with the element that describes you best.

Earth is a crisp, green leafy print, perfect for the grounded ones in the group. Air is light, wispy clouds, a favorite of the wishy-washy. Fire is a deep, robust flame that will light the eyes of those whose attitudes are just as vivacious. Water looks like a refreshing ocean wave, cool, clean and sporadic, just like the person on whom they’d be a perfect fit.

They’re made of the same super soft, stretch microfiber as the X Micro pieces, but if you haven’t already tried the X Collection, imagine the softness of your favorite t-shirt with the stretchy feeling of a sporty microfiber, and you’ve got the unique fabric used to make the Calvin Klein X Elements Collection. As with all limited edition collections that rock, these are bound to sell out fast so if you plan on channeling your inner Planeteer, we recommend doing so post haste. Go Planet!

You know you need underwear when…

(25 August 2010)

It could be the “Hoarders” billboard that looms outside Freshpair’s offices that made me think like this, but when I opened my underwear drawer today, my once bright and shiny collection of briefs, trunks and everything in between looked like a big, dull mess.  In with the newer additions were tarnished pairs of old, marked by years of wear and tear, the waistbands frilly with elastic that went kaput ages ago. I think my negligence came from overlooking these poor, unfortunate souls every time I reached in my drawer for a fresh pair, brushing them aside but never considering disposal might be the better option.

So this caused me to ask: when it comes to underwear, how old is too old?

Underwear, like everything else that is worn and washed, has an expiration date and just because it’s not printed on the box doesn’t mean we can ignore this fact. The whole “sentimental value” thing only works with jewelry and sweaters, so if that’s your reason for retaining a pair of BVDs with more pills than a pharmacy, sniff them goodbye and move onto bigger and more elastic things. We’re definitely on your side when it comes to wanting underwear with endurance—after all, good skivvies don’t come cheap nowadays—so we’ve done the dirty work and chosen a few favorites that will keep longer so you can spend your money on more important things (like jewelry and sweaters).

aussieBum Undies: They come in every color imaginable, so there’s a match for all types of guys. They’re your good, old-fashioned brief with a modern touch here and there to give them a better fit, and because they’re aussieBum, they look good on everybody (a bold claim, we know, but give them a try anyway—see what we mean). And they last forever.

2xist Contrast Contour Pouch Brief: I’ve cleaned out the ol’ underwear dungeon several times, and still manage to pass these off as survivors, no doubt due to their durability.

Calvin Klein Pro Stretch Reflex Low Rise Trunk: Sometimes you can’t argue with technology, and technology is to thank for the microfiber that makes the CK Pro Stretch Reflex Low Rise Trunk the underwear that takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin.’ This athletic trunk is durable, smooth, cool and keeps you dry as a bone. Pretty much a permanent installation in your underwear drawer.

Emporio Armani Stretch Cotton Hip Brief: Don’t let the fancy label fool you—there’s nothing dainty about these briefs. You can wash them and wear them and they still feel and look good as new!

You never know when your underwear will find itself in the spotlight, so don’t wait until they sag to throw them into the bag.

2(x)ist Underwear Review

(11 March 2010)

Renowned for its fashionable and functional underwear, 2(x)ist is synonymous with cutting edge style and has become an iconic American brand for men’s designer underwear.

2(x)ist took what was once a purely functional garment and elevated it to fashion status by applying key tenets of great design- cut, materials, and fit, all the best for a man with sophisticated tastes.  As 2(x)ist continues to evolve, expect to see new categories and innovative materials as the brand continues to refine and redefine the men’s underwear and bodywear category worldwide.

We reviewed a number of items from the 2xist Essentials Range including briefs, trunks and athletic tanks.  The cotton range is the main line of 2xist underwear and is probably featured in many peoples top drawer.

Essentials Contour Pouch Brief
Essentials Contour Pouch Brief
The 2xist Contour Pouch Brief, from the new 2xist Essentials Collection, is a classic brief designed for everyday wear. This 2(x)ist brief features a double-layer contour pouch and a sleek logo elastic waistband. With no side or rear seams, the 2(x)ist Contour Pouch Brief has a low-profile look under clothing.

Essentials No Show Trunk
Essentials No Show Trunk
The 2xist Essentials No Show Trunk, from the new 2xist Essentials Collection, is a low-rise trunk designed to be worn with your favorite hipster jeans and low-rise pants. This 2(x)ist trunk features a double-layer contour pouch and a sleek logo elastic waistband. With shorter legs than a boxer brief, the 2(x)ist Essentials No Show Trunk is perfect for guys who want full coverage and support with a lower profile design.

Essentials 3-Pack Athletic Shirt
Essentials 3-Pack Athletic Shirt
The 2xist Essentials 3-Pack Athletic Shirt, from the new 2xist Essentials Collection, is a multipack of classic layering tanks. Made from a soft, lightweight cotton with a variegated rib, these 2xist tank tops have engineered stretch for a contoured fit. The 2xist Essentials 3-Pack Athletic Shirt is just the thing for stocking up your collection of layering tanks.

We found the range to be quite good, however the trunk doesn’t allow for much room at the front.  The Athletic tank is perfect for the gym, undershirt or worn with jeans. The price of the range varies from $12-$29.50.

Overall we rate 2xist 8/10. Click on any pf the photos above to purchase from FreshPair.com and receive free shipping!
