Budgie Run in Sydney

DSC_1017 Budgie Bolt launch Sydney

Togs, swimmers, DTs, speedos or budgie smugglers – regardless of what you call them one thing’s for sure, they have their time and place and running through inner-city Sydney on a busy Friday morning is not one of them…unless it’s for charity of course.

National charity Youngcare, which is dedicated to helping young people forced to live in aged care facilities due to their high-care needs, is calling on men and women to publicly smuggle their budgies on Friday 22 March in the GIO Youngcare Budgie Bolt.

The 5km inner-city fun run, from Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour to Pyrmont and back is a one-of-a- kind fundraising event aimed at raising awareness of the issue of young Australians being forced to live in aged care facilities because they have no alternative.

Sponsor GIO has committed an army of budgie smugglers to the cause.

“We’ll have brave GIO staff decked out in their Budgie Smugglers running to raise awareness and much needed funds for Youngcare so they can continue to provide choice in care and housing options for young people with high care needs,” GIO Executive Manager CTP Insurance, Matthew Kayrooz said.

“The GIO Youngcare Budgie Bolt is an opportunity to do something a little bit daring in order to draw attention to this important issue and raise much needed funds,” Mr Kayrooz said.

Nick Bonifant, Youngare Co-Founder said while the event is very light-hearted, it will make a profound impact on the lives of young Aussies in desperate need.

“Running in your budgie smugglers for Youngcare is a brave gesture and gives you the ultimate feeling of freedom, which is how being young should feel,” Mr Bonifant said.

Top tips for the 2013 GIO Youngcare Budgie Bolt:

  1. There’s safety in numbers – round up your mates and bolt in numbers.
  2. Stretch – it’s one thing to run around in your budgies and another to have to hobble around thecourse.
  3. Aim to finish strong. Slow and steady wins the race. In this running attire you’ll be guaranteed aphoto finish regardless of where you place so make it memorable.
